Biomes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biomes | A very large region on Earth. It is defined by its unique climate, weather patterns, soil, and the specific types of plants and animals that live there |
| Rainforest | A tall, dense forest that gets a very high amount of rain each year, usually more than 70 to 80 inches. These warm and wet places cover a small part of Earth, but they are home to more than half of all the plant and animal species in the world. |
| Chapparral | A shrubland community with a Mediterranean climate, featuring hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. It is found in coastal regions |
| Arctic | A cold, treeless region near the North Pole. It features permanently frozen soil called permafrost, very little rain, long and dark winters, and short summers |
| Coniferous forest (Taiga) | Also known as the boreal forest or snow forest, is the world's largest land ecosystem. It is a cold, subarctic region stretching in a vast belt across North America, Europe, and Asia, located just south of the tundra and north of temperate forests |
| Temperate Deciduous Forest | A major global ecosystem found in mid-latitude regions with four distinct seasons, warm wet summers, and cold winters. It is defined by broadleaf trees that drop their leaves every autumn to survive the cold winter months. |
| Desert | A very dry land area. It gets less than 25 centimeters (10 inches) of rain or snow each year. These regions feature extreme temperatures, high evaporation rates, and sparse plant life where specialized animals and plants survive with little water |
| Grasslands | A large, open land area where grass is the main plant. These regions get more rain than deserts, but not enough rain to grow large forests. |
| Oceans | The largest aquatic (marine) biome on Earth, covering roughly 71% of the planet's surface. It is a continuous body of saltwater characterized by high salinity, deep basins, and distinct vertical or horizontal zones based on sunlight. |
| Microhabitat | A very small, specific, and localized environment It has unique physical conditions—such as a distinct temperature, moisture level, or light amount—that differ from the broader habitat surrounding it |
