1. What is another name for Medieval Europe? . The Middle Ages
. When did the Middle Ages begin? After the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
What were the Three Important Groups in the Middle Ages? The Church (bishops, monks, priests), the Aristocracy (wealthy nobles), and Commoners (everyone else).
Who was Charlemagne? A king in Europe who spread Christianity across most of Europe.
How did Charlemagne impact Europe? Helped stabilize Europe — his powerful armies conquered enemies and expanded his kingdom.
What impact did Charlemagne have on education? Encouraged learning and education, and had monks create illuminated manuscripts
What was special about the Catholic Church after the fall of the Roman Empire? It was the only major institution that survived the fall of the Roman Empire.
How did the Catholic Church help Europe during the Middle Ages? Provided stability across Europe during the Middle Ages
What are monasteries? Communities where bishops, monks, and priests lived together.
Why were monasteries important? Became centers of learning in Europe during the Middle Ages.
What was the relationship between monasteries and books? The only places where books were kept safe during this time period.
What were monks responsible for? Monks living in monasteries were responsible for preserving books.
What was one important job of a monk? Created illuminated manuscripts — hand-decorated books that were clear and easy to read.
When were Town Fairs held? Usually held on religious holidays, when people did not have to work.
Why were Town Fairs helpful to people? Gave people the opportunity to buy and sell goods and make money.
How did Town Fairs impact local economies? Local economies depended on fairs to survive and grow.
What was Feudalism? The system of government during the Middle Ages, based on loyalty.
In Feudalism, what was the relationship between kings and lords? Kings gave land and protection to lords in exchange for loyalty and military service.
In Feudalism, what did serfs receive and give? Serfs received farmland and protection in exchange for loyalty and labor.
How did Feudalism impact social roles of people? Depended on strict social roles — people did not change roles easily.
What was Manorialism? The economic system of the Middle Ages, centered on the manor (a small town).
In the Manor System, what were the responsibilities of the Lord? Lived in the manor house; provided land and farming equipment to serfs; hired knights.
In the Manor System, what were the Knights' roles? Obeyed the lord; protected all the people living on the manor.
In the Manor System, what were the serfs' roles? Grew crops for the lord; gave most crops to the lord in exchange for a place to live and work.
