Biochemistry

Chemistry The study of matter what it consist of what its properties are and are we changes
Matter Is anything that has mass and take up space – that is anything that is physically real
Science The process by which we learn about the natural universe by observing testing and then generating models that explain our observation
Geology The study of Rocks and Earth
Scientific method An organized procedure for learning answers to questions
The general steps of the scientific method Proposal hypothesis Test the hypothesis Refine the hypothesis if necessary
Theory A general statement that describes a large set of observations and data
Matter is classified into two categories Physical properties Chemical properties
Physical property of matter Characteristics that describe matter such as size shape, and color
Chemical properties of matter Characteristic that describes a matter changes its chemical structure or composition
Substance Any example of matter that has the same physical and chemical properties throughout the sample
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into chemically simpler component
Compound A substance that can be broken down into chemically simpler components
Atom The smallest part of an element that maintains the identity of the element
Molecule The smallest part of compound that maintains the identity of the compound
Microscopic View of the universe in which one is working with a few atoms are molecules at the time
Macroscopic A view of the universe in which one is working with large numbers of atoms or molecules at a time
Mixture A sample compose of two or more substances
Heterogeneous mixture Mixture that is a combination of two or more substances
Homogenous mixture A mixture that acts as a single substance so that it is not obvious that two or more substances are present
Phases A certain form of matter that includes a specific set of physical properties
Phase change A physical process in which a substance goes from one phase to another
