| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Reflexive property | any quanity is equal to itself ex. a=a |
| symmetric property | order around the equal sign changes ex. if a=b then b=a |
| transitive property | chains equality together ex. if a=b and b=c then a=c |
| substitution property | if a=b then a may be replaced by b anywhere in an expression |
| additive identity | adding zero to any real number does not change its value ex. 9+0=9 |
| additive inverse | a number and its opposite add up to its yield zero, canceling each other out. ex. 14 + (-14) = 0 |
| multiplicative identity | multiplying any number by one leaves it unchanged |
| zero property | multiplying any real number by zero yields zero |
| multiplicative inverse | two numbers whose product whose is one is called recipicals ex. 4/5 5/4 = 1 |
| commutative | states that changing the order of numbers does not change their sum or product. (a + b = b +a) |
| associative property | states that changing the grouping of numbers does not change its sum |
