quotient the answer you get when you divide one number by another
product the answer you get when you multiply two or more numbers or values together
sum answer to an addition problem
difference answer to a subtraction problem
variable A letter like x or y that stands for a number you do not know yet
constant term without a variable (letter)
term numbers/variables separated by a + or -
coefficient the number next to a variable
absolute value distance from zero
substitution replacing a variable (letter) with a value (number)
evaluate solve
expression math sentence WITHOUT an equal sign
equation math problem WITH an equal sign
exponents a small number written above and to the right of a base number. It shows how many times you multiply the base number by itself.
Order of Operations PEMDAS
perimeter the total distance around the outside edge of a two-dimensional shape
distribute multiplying an outside number or letter by each separate term inside a set of parentheses
