What is the function of dendrites? Receive signals
Axon Transmits impulses and releases neurotransmitters to another neuron or effector
How many axons can a neuron have? Only 1 axon
What is an effector? Another neuron, muscle cell, or gland cell
Schwann cells Neuroglia of the PNS that wrap around some axons in layers
Myelin Mixture of fats and proteins that fill layers made by Schwann cell membranes
Myelin sheath Wrapped coating around some PNS axons made of Schwann cell membranes and myelin
What is the function of the myelin sheath? Acts as an electrical insulator
Nodes of Ranvier Gaps in the myelin sheath between Schwann cells
