How do astronomers place galaxies in groups? by their shapes
The main shape categories that galaxies are separated into are... spiral, elliptical, or irregular
Spiral Galaxy look like shaped like a pinwheel with many arms
Some spiral galaxies have long dense centers that look like a bar. What is that called? barred spiral galaxies
Our solar system is in an arm of a barred spiral Galaxy called? the Milky Way
Rounded and shaped like stretched-out circles are called? Elliptical galaxies
Elliptical galaxies can be shaped like an egg or thick pancake
Elliptical galaxies are the largest and most common because they are among the oldest
Galaxies with no distinct shape are classified as irregular galaxies
Irregular galaxies appear chaotic and may look like clouds or blobs
irregular Galaxies may have been caused by collisions with other galaxies
When a star dies what is created? a black hole
In a black hole what happens? the pull of gravity is so great, that nothing can escape
Why is it important for scientists to know about galaxies? It allows scientists to gain a better understanding of what has already happened in the Milky Way and what might still happen in the future.
