Characteristics of Life

| Asexual Reproduction | A single organism produces genetically identical offspring. Bacteria, some worms, hydra, and some plants reproduce asexually. |
| Biology | The study of life and living things |
| Cells | The basic unit of structure and function of all living organisms. |
| Development | The series of progressive changes an organism goes through as it matures from a single cell into a complex adult. |
| DNA | The tiny molecule inside living cells that holds the genetic instructions. |
| Evolution | The process where the inherited traits of a population change over generations. |
| Feedback Mechanism | Special systems that help an organism respond to changes and keep things at safe levels (maintain homeostasis). |
| Gamete | A reproductive cell or sex cell. In humans and other animals, male gametes are sperm and female gametes are egg cells. |
| Growth | The permanent increase in the size, mass, or number of cells in a living organism. |
| Homeostasis | The maintenance of a stable internal environment, despite a changing external environment. |
| Metabolism | The sum total of the biochemical reactions occurring in an organism. |
| Multicellular | Organisms are composed of more than one cell. *Cells form tissues, and tissues form organs. *Organs work together to form organ systems. |
| Negative Feedback Loop | Keeps the body stable by reversing any changes that move conditions away from normal. Example: If you get too hot, you sweat to cool off. If you get too cold, you shiver to generate heat. |
| Offspring | The new young organisms made by one or two parent living things through reproduction. |
| Positive Feedback Loops | Does not stabilize the body's conditions. Instead, it intensifies a response to achieve a specific outcome. Blood clotting: |
| Reproduction | The process of making the next generation of organisms. It may be a sexual or asexual process. |
| Response | How a living thing reacts to a change or signal in its environment. |
| Sexual Reproduction | Gametes (sperm and egg) from two individual parents unite to create new genetically unique offspring. Most plants and animals reproduce sexually. |
| Stimulus | Anything that causes a living thing, body part, or system to react, change, or take action. Example: Temperature rising or blood sugar increasing. |
| Unicellular | Organisms are single-celled. Atoms make up the molecules that form the cell's structures. |
