Reconstruction To rebuild referring to the period 1865-1877 in the United States when former Confederate states were under control of the federal government.
Freedmen Formley enslaved people who have been released from slavery, usually by legal means historically enslaved people became freedmen
Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction (Ten Percent Plan) A proposal by president Abraham Lincoln for the reconstruction of the south after the civil war in which a state could begin the process of reuniting with the union.
Radical Republicans A member of Congress during the Civil War and Reconstruction who wanted to permanently end slavery and guarantee equal rights for African Americans.
Wade-Davis Bill Fifty percent of white males pledge an oath of loyalty and allow black men the right to vote. Denied Confederate soldiers the right to vote.
Andrew Johnson When Lincon got assianted he became the new president he believed that amnesty to white Southerners who pledge loyalty to the United States, Confederate leaders had to directly request a pardon.
Presidential Reconstruction The period of reconstruction era that took place from 1865 through 1867 under president Andrew johnson/
Black Codes Black social and economic suppression.
Civil Rights Act of 1866 Signed in Law, stated that all persons born in the United States” with the exception of Americans Indians, were herby declared to citizens of the us
Thaddeus Stevens U.S congressmen and Radical Republican who fought for the rights of Black people and the end of slavery during the Civil War and Reconstruction
Reconstruction Act of 1867 Divided the former confederate states, expect for Tennessee. Former Confederate states could regain representation in Congress a new constitution. IF a new state constitution, approved by a majority of voters, including Black Americans.

14th Amendment Granted citizenship to formerly enslaved males
15th Amendment Granted formerly enslaved males the right to vote.
Amnesty Act of 1872 A federal law that granted amnesty to former confederates who fought in the American Civil War, removing most penalties imposed by the 14th amendment

What constitutional issues affected Reconstruction? Reconstruction was deeply shaped by constitutional debates over the legal status of freedmen, citizenship rights, voting rights, and the balance of power between the federal government and states
Why didn't Lincoln support the Wade-Davis Bill? l because it would make reentry of Southern states to the Union difficult. Lincoln wanted a more moderate approach.
How did Presidential Reconstruction envision reunification? Presidential Reconstruction aimed to reunite the nation quickly and leniently, restoring Southern states to the Union with minimal punishment while emphasizing loyalty and the abolition of slavery.
How did Black Codes limit the rights of African Americans? Black Codes restricted African Americans’ freedom, controlled their labor, and maintained white supremacy after the abolition of slavery.
Why did the Radical Republicans take control of Reconstruction? Radical Republicans took control of Reconstruction to enforce civil rights for freed African Americans and to counter President Andrew Johnson’s lenient policies toward the South.
How was Radical Reconstruction different from Presidential Reconstruction? Presidential Reconstruction was lenient and focused on rapid reunification, while Radical Reconstruction imposed strict federal oversight and guaranteed civil rights for freed African Americans.
