Earth's Layers
| Term | Definition |

| crust | The outer layer of the Earth. Made up of both continental (land) and oceanic crust (under the ocean). 5-50 km thick |
| Oceanic Crust | A thin layer of crust that overlies the ocean basins |
| Continental Crust | Layer of rock which forms the continents |
| lithosphere | Solid outer section of the Earth, which includes the crust and upper mantle; divided into tectonic plates |
| asthenosphere | Upper part of the mantle; located below the lithosphere |
| subduction | dense oceanic crust sinks beneath less dense continental crust |
| mantle | Largest layer of the Earth under the crust about 2,890km |
| outer core | Liquid layer 2,300 km thick, second largest. Lies between inner core and mantle; responsible for Earth's magnetic field |
| inner core | A solid ball of metal, 1,250 km thick. So hot it melts everything in the outer core. |
| density | how tightly packed particles are in a substance; more space between particles = less dense; less space between particles = more dense |
| convection current | circular movement of material caused by differences in temperature and density. In the Earth’s mantle, hotter, less‑dense rock rises, while cooler, denser rock sinks. |
