| Term | Definition |

| Ethos | The writers appeal -- anything that makes the audience consider the writer & their credibility. |
| Pathos | Appealing to emotions |
| Logos | Appealing to logic & reasoning |
| Claim/Thesis | A statement made about an issue that asserts a perspective |
| Reasons | Statements in an argument that supports a given claim. They are answers to hypothetical challenges. |
| Credibility | The degree to which a source is believable and trustworthy |
| Evidence | Info used as proof to support a claim or thesis |
| Issue | Important problem for debate/discussion |
| Line of Reasoning | Arrangement of reasons backing a claim and evidence that leads to a conclusion |
| Perspective | A P.O.V conveyed through an argument |
| Point of View | A position or stand point on a topic or issue |
| Assumption | A belief regarded as true and often unstated |
| Author | One who creates a work that can convey a perspective & can be examined |
| Bias | A personal opinion, belief or value that may influence ones judgement, perspective or claim |
| Commentary | Discussion and analysis of evidence in relation to the claim which may identify patterns, describe trends, and/or explain relationships. |
| Complex Issue | Issue involving many facets or perspectives that must be understood in order to address it |
| Context | The intent, audience, purpose, bias, situatedness, and/or background of a source or reference. |
| Conventions | The stylistic features of writing |
| Inquiry | A process for seeking truth, info, or knowledge through a study, research, investigation or artistic endeavor/work |
| Limitation | A boundary/point where an argument/generalization is no longer valid |
| Primary Source | An original source of information about a topic. |
| Secondary Source | A commentary about one or more primary sources that provides additional insight, opinions and/or interpertations about the primary source, |
| Text | Something composed that conveys a perspective & can be examined. |
| Qualitative | Having to do with text, narrative, descriptions |
| Quantitative | Having to do with numbers, amounts or quantities |
| Reliability | Extent to which something can be trusted to be accurate |
| Validity | Extent to which an argument/claim is logical |
| Lens | Filter through which an issue/topic is considered/examined |
| Deductive Reasoning | Constructs general proportions that are supported with evidence/cases (General --> Specific) |
| Inductive Reasoning | Presents cases/evidence that leads to a logical conclusion (Specific --> General) |
