| kinetic energy | the energy of an object due to its motion |
| potential energy | stored energy of an object |
| mechanical energy | the total energy of motion and position/stored energy of an object |
| chemical energy | the potential energy stored in chemical bonds |
| Gravitational Potential Energy | the potential energy of an object due to its position/height above the ground. |
| light energy | energy that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves |
| sound energy | the energy of vibrating matter. |
| electrical energy | the energy of moving electric charges. |
| thermal energy | the energy of moving particles |
| nuclear energy | the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. The total amount of energy in a system is always the same, no matter how many transformations occur. |
| Conduction | The transfer of thermal energy from one particle of matter to another through touch or direct contact. Particles in a warmer object vibrate more quickly than particles in a cooler object. |
| Convection | The process of thermal energy transfer in fluids (gases and liquids) through rising and falling currents in the fluid. |
| Radiation | The transfer of energy through matter or space by electromagnetic waves. |
| Conductor | A material that can easily transfer thermal energy. |
| Insulator | A material that does not readily transfer thermal energy. |
| Specific heat | The amount of heat energy (Q) required to change the temperature (ΔT) of one kilogram of a substance by one degree Celsius. |
