TermDefinition
Hormone A chemical messenger made by a gland that helps control different functions in the body
Pituitary gland A gland at the base of the brain that controls many other endocrine glands and important body functions
Thyroid gland A gland in the neck that produces hormones that help control metabolism, energy, and growth
Adrenal glands Small glands above the kidneys that produce hormones that help the body respond to stress and control other body functions
Pancreas An organ that produces hormones such as insulin to help control blood sugar and also helps with digestion
Tonsils Areas of lymphatic tissue in the throat that help protect the body from germs
Spleen An organ that filters blood, removes old blood cells, and helps the body fight infection
Thymus An organ in the chest where certain white blood cells called T cells develop
Lymph nodes Small structures that filter lymph fluid and help the body fight infections
Lymphatic vessels Small tubes that carry lymph fluid through the body and help return fluid to the bloodstream
Cardiologist A physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system
Cardiology The study of the heart and cardiovascular system
Myocarditis Inflammation of the heart muscle
Endocarditis Inflammation or infection of the inner lining of the heart
Electrocardiograph A device that records the electrical activity of the heart
