| Long Bones | Long and narrow and have expanded ends. |

| Irregular Bones | Bones with a variety of shapes, and most are connected to several other bones. |
| Epiphysis | The expanded end of a long bone. |
| Diaphysis | Bone shaft. |
| Epiphyseal Plate | Band of cartilage that persists between the ossification centers and is the region where the bone grows in length. |
| Epiphyseal Line | Forms when the epiphyseal plate ossifies; at this point, the bone can no longer grow in length. |
| Red Bone Marrow | Produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. |
| Yellow Bone Marrow | Stores fat and does not produce blood cells. |

| Lamella | Layers of bone matrix that cluster around the central canal in each osteon. |
| Canaliculus | Tiny passageway through which the cell processes of osteocytes exchange nutrients and wastes. |
| Trabeculae | Branching bony plates that make up spongy bone. |
