Long Bones Long and narrow and have expanded ends.
Short Bones Cube-like, with length equal to width, and include sesamoid (round) bones, which are embedded in tendons.
Flat Bones Plate-like bones with broad surfaces.
Irregular Bones Bones with a variety of shapes, and most are connected to several other bones.
Epiphysis The expanded end of a long bone.
Diaphysis Bone shaft.
Epiphyseal Plate Band of cartilage that persists between the ossification centers and is the region where the bone grows in length.
Epiphyseal Line Forms when the epiphyseal plate ossifies; at this point, the bone can no longer grow in length.
Red Bone Marrow Produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Yellow Bone Marrow Stores fat and does not produce blood cells.
Medullary Canal/Cavity Hollow chamber in the diaphysis that contains marrow.
Spongy Bone Consists of branching plates called trabeculae and is somewhat flexible.
Compact Bone Consists of cylindrical units called osteons and is strong and solid.
Periosteum Encloses the bone and is made of dense connective tissue.
Endosteum Lines the spaces and cavity of the bone.
Perforating (Volkmann's) Canal Runs across/perpendicular to the central canals.
Osteocyte Mature bone cell.
Lacuna Chamber occupied by an osteocyte.
Osteon Cylindrical unit of compact bone.
Central (Haversian's) Canal Central canal located in the center of each osteon.
Lamella Layers of bone matrix that cluster around the central canal in each osteon.
Canaliculus Tiny passageway through which the cell processes of osteocytes exchange nutrients and wastes.
Trabeculae Branching bony plates that make up spongy bone.
