| bathos | the effect of anticlimax |
| caricature | an exaggeration of certain characteristics |
| deus ex machina | latin for "god from the machine-a plot device where an unsolvable, seemingly hopeless problem in a story is suddenly and abruptly resolved by an unexpected, unlikely occurrence |
| epiphany | when a character in a story finds a random inspiration to solve a problem |
| foreshadowing | a phrase or action in a story that hints to a future event |
| in medias res | starting a story in the middle of an important event |
| invocation | when a character prays for higher help (from gods, etc.) |
| irony | when someone says or does something, the opposite happens |
| irony, verbal | occurs when a speaker says one thing but means another, often conveying a meaning that is opposite to the literal interpretation of their words |
| irony, situational | where the outcome of a situation is the exact opposite of what was intended or expected |
| irony, romantic | the author breaks the illusion of fiction to highlight their presence, often creating a detached, playful tension between high romantic ideals and mundane reality |
| irony, dramatic | a narrative device where the audience knows critical information that character do not, creating intense suspense, dread, or humor |
| irony, cosmic | the "irony of life" is a literary technique and philosophical concept where the universe, gods, or fate toy with human expectations, leading to outcomes that contradict intentions |
| melodrama | an overhyped emotional part of the story that usually has no meaning to it |
| pathos | a quality that usually evokes sadness |
| poetic diction | how a certain language interacts with the flow |
| poetic license | not a hearing to the usual language rules to make poetry better |
