What is Federation and when did it occur? When six British colonies came together to form the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
What is the Australian Constitution and when did it come into effect? The document that sets out how Australia is governed.
What are the three branches of government? Parliament, Executive, Judiciary
What is Separation of powers? Separating power into three branches of government so no branch has complete power.
What are Checks and balances? Each branch can limit the powers of the others.
What is a Bicameral Parliament? Parliament with two houses
What is the Senate? The upper house of the parliament
What is the Cabinet? A high-level group of government ministers led by a prime minister or president
What is the highest court called? The High Court of Australia
What is a bill? A draft of a proposed law
What is an Act? When a bill becomes a law
What is a Representative Democracy? Citizens elect representatives
What is Representation? MPs act on behalf of voters
What is Sovereignty? Ultimate authority belongs to the people
What is a Referendum? National vote to change the Constitution
What is Legislation? Laws made by parliament
What is a Portfolio? Area of responsibility for a minister
What is Court Hierarchy? Ranking of courts from lowest to highest
