5 layers of the epidermis skin

QuestionAnswer
The bottom layer. New skin cells are made here. Contains pigment cells (melanocytes). Stratum Basale (Deepest layer)
The “spiny” layer. Cells connect tightly, giving the skin strength. Helps with immune defense. Stratum Spinosum
Cells start dying and flattening. They release waterproofing materials to keep moisture in. Stratum Granulosum
A clear, thin layer found ONLY in thick skin (palms and soles). Adds extra protection. Stratum Lucidum
Top layer. Made of dead, flat cells full of keratin. Known as avascular (without blood vessels) Protects against germs, friction, and water loss. Stratum Corneum (Superficial layers)
