ALARA concept The concept of radiation protection that states that all exposures should be kept "as low as reasonable achievable"
Ampere A unit of electrical current.
Anode The positive electrode in the x-ray tube.
Atom The basic unit of an element
Bremsstrahlung radiation electromagnetic radiation produced when a charged particle decelerates after deflecting off an atomic nucleus.
Cathode The negative electrode in the x-ray tube
Central ray the exact center of an X-ray beam used to aim at the middle of the anatomy being imaged
Contrast is the visible difference between light and dark areas on a radiograph.
Control panel the interface or console used to select and adjust exposure settings (like voltage and time) before taking an X-ray.
Density overall darkness or blackness of an X-ray image.
Dental radiography the process of taking X-ray images of the teeth and mouth.
Digital radiography the process of taking X-rays using digital sensors instead of film.
Digital imaging the process of creating, viewing, and saving X-ray pictures on a computer instead of using film.
Distortion the change in the true size or shape of an object on an X-ray image.
Dose (of radiation) amount of radiation energy absorbed by the body.
Dosimeter a wearable device that measures a person's total exposure to radiation.
Electron negatively charged particle that circles an atom's center.
Energy the power or force used to produce X-rays.
Extension arm the adjustable metal arm that holds and moves the X-ray machine head.
Genetic effects radiation-caused DNA changes passed down to a person's children.
Image the final visual picture produced on film or a computer screen by an X-ray.
Image receptor the digital sensor or film that captures the X-ray beam to create the final picture.
Intensity the total power or brightness of the X-ray beam.
Ion an atom that has gained or lost an electron, giving it an electrical charge.
Ionization the process where an atom gains or loses an electron, giving it an electrical charge.
Ionizing radiation high-energy radiation that can remove electrons from atoms, creating charged particles.

Lead apron a heavy, protective jacket worn by patients to block radiation from reaching vital organs during an X-ray.
Magnification the proportional enlargement of an object's size on an X-ray image compared to its actual size.
Master switch, indicator light, selector buttons, exposure button The switches, lights, and buttons used to power the machine, choose settings, and shoot the X-ray.

Milliampere (mA) the electrical current setting that controls the amount or quantity of X-rays produced.
Penumbra the blurry or fuzzy edge around the sharp center of an X-ray image.
Personal radiation monitoring badge a wearable device that tracks the total amount of radiation a worker is exposed to over time.
Photon a tiny packet or particle of light or X-ray energy.
Primary beam the main, original path of X-rays coming straight out of the X-ray tube before hitting any object.
Primary radiation the original, useful X-ray beam that comes straight out of the X-ray tube head.
Quality (of x-ray beam) the energy, penetrating power, or strength of the X-ray beam.
