QuestionAnswer
What are the four major tissue types? Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.
What is the function of epithelial tissue? Protection, secretion, absorption, and excretion.
Where is epithelial tissue located? Covers body surface, covers and lines internal organs, and composes glands.
What are the distinguishing characteristics of epithelial tissue? Lack blood vessels, cells readily divide, and cells are tightly packed.
What is the function of connective tissue? Bind, support, protect, fill spaces, store fat, and produce blood cells.
Where is connective tissue located? Widely distributed throughout the body.
What are the distinguishing characteristics of connective tissue? Mostly have good blood supply, cells are farther apart than epithelial cells, with extracellular matrix in between.
What is the function of muscle tissue? Movement.
Where is muscle tissue located? Attached to bones, in the walls of hollow internal organs, and the heart.
What is the distinguishing characteristic of muscle tissue? Able to contract in response to specific stimuli.
What is the function of nervous tissue? Conduct impulses for coordination, regulation, integration, and sensory reception.
Where is nervous tissue located? Brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
What is the distinguishing characteristic of nervous tissue? Cells communicate with each other and other body parts.
What are the three types of intercellular junctions? Tight junctions, desmosomes, and gap junctions.
What are tight junctions? Close space between cells by fusing cell membranes. (Keep your body's integrity and prevents things from passing through)
What is an example of tight junctions? Cells that line the small intestine.
What are desmosomes? Bind cells by forming "spot welds" between cell membranes.
What is an example of desmosomes? Cells of the outer skin layer.
What are gap junctions? Form tubular channels between cells that allow exchange of substances.
What is an example of gap junctions? Muscle cells of the heart and digestive tract.
What is a general characteristic of epithelium? Lack blood vessels (avascular).
What are the three epithelial cell shapes? Squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-shaped), and columnar (tall).
What are the three epithelial tissue layers? Simple (one layer of cells), stratified (2 or more layers of cells), and pseudostratified (appears layered, but is not).
What does pseudo mean? Fake.
What is simple squamous epithelium? Single layer, flattened cells.
What is the function of simple squamous epithelium? Filtration, diffusion, osmosis, covers surface.
Where is simple squamous epithelium located? Air sacs of lungs, walls of capillaries, linings of blood and lymph vessels, part of the membranes lining body cavities and covering viscera.
What is simple cuboidal epithelium? Single layer, cube-shaped cells.
What is the function of simple cuboidal epithelium? Protection, secretion, absorption.
Where is simple cuboidal epithelium located? Surface of ovaries, linings of kidney tubules, and linings of ducts of certain glands.
What is simple columnar epithelium? Single layer, elongated cells.
What is the function of simple columnar epithelium? Protection, secretion, absorption.
Where is simple columnar epithelium located? Linings of uterus, stomach, and intestines.
What is pseudostratified columnar epithelium? Single layer, elongated cells.
What is the function of pseudostratified columnar epithelium? Protection, secretion, absorption.
Where is pseudostratified columnar epithelium located? Linings of uterus, stomach, and intestines.
What is stratified squamous epithelium? Many layers, top cells flattened.
What is the function of stratified squamous epithelium? Protection, outer layer of skin, called the epidermis, is keratinized.
Where is stratified squamous epithelium located? Superficial layer of skin and linings of oral cavity, vagina, and anal canal (exit from outside world).
What is transitional epithelium? Many layers of cube-shaped and elongated cells.
What is the function of transitional epithelium? Stretchability, protection.
Where is transitional epithelium located? Inner lining of urinary bladder and linings of ureters and part of urethra.
What is glandular epithelium? Composed of cells that produce and secrete substances into ducts or body fluids.
What are the two types of glands in the body? Endocrine glands and exocrine glands.
What are endocrine glands? Secrete into tissue fluid or blood.
What are exocrine glands? Secrete into ducts that open onto a surface.
What are merocrine glands? Secrete fluid products by exocytosis.
What are examples of merocrine glands? Salivary and sweat glands, pancreas.
What are apocrine glands? Lose small part of cell during secretion.
What are examples of apocrine glands? Mammary and ceruminous glands.
What are holocrine glands? Release entire cells filled with product.
What is an example of a holocrine gland? Sebaceous glands.
