(Pre-Mechanical & Mechanical Era) Abacus The earliest known manual calculating tool, using beads on rods to perform arithmetic.
(Pre-Mechanical & Mechanical Era) Pascaline The first mechanical calculator, invented by Blaise Pascal, which used a series of interlocking gears and dials to add and subtract.
(Pre-Mechanical & Mechanical Era) Analytical Engine Designed by Charles Babbage, this was the first concept of a general purpose, programmable computer that included an ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit), basic flow control, and memory.
First Generation (1940s–1950s) Vacuum Tubes Glass tubes containing electrodes that controlled the flow of electricity. They were used as the primary processing components but generated immense heat, were highly fragile, and consumed massive amounts of power.
First Generation (1940s–1950s) Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer The first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer.
First Generation (1940s–1950s) UNIVAC Universal Automatic Computer The first commercial computer.
Second Generation (1950s–1960s) Transistors Small, solid-state semiconductor devices that replaced vacuum tubes.
Third Generation (1960s–1970s) Integrated Circuits (ICs) Also known as a microchip, an __ consists of thousands of miniaturized transistors and other electronic components etched onto a single small piece of silicon.
Third Generation (1960s–1970s) This era introduced operating systems, keyboards, and monitors, allowing multiple applications to run simultaneously.
