How should the Nurse respond when a patient is having a seizure? Turn them onto their side to Protect the head Remove nearby objects and loosen tight clothing. Note the start time and observe the movements. Provide oxygen and suction after the seizure as needed.
Define seizure? Abnormal, sudden, excessive, uncontrolled electrical discharge of brain neurons.
Phenytoin Anticonvulsant medication used to prevent and control seizures. Therapeutic blood level: 10–20 mcg/mL
Toxicity signs of phenytoin? Common adverse effect? Toxicity signs: nystagmus ataxia slurred speech confusion sedation Common adverse effect: gingival hyperplasia
Teaching concerning phenytoin? Teach good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Do not stop it suddenly—this can trigger seizures.
When administering Phenytoin, remember to? When given IV, monitor blood pressure and ECG because rapid administration can cause hypotension and dysrhythmias. Give IV phenytoin with normal saline, not dextrose.
