Composition Devices

HSC Music 2 Terminology

QuestionAnswer
Augmentation A melody or rhythm repeated with longer note values.
Diminution A melody or rhythm repeated with shorter note values
Ostinato A short musical pattern repeated continuously.
Imitation A melody repeated by another voice or instrument.
Retrograde A melody or rhythm performed in reverse.
Aleatoric Music that includes elements of chance or performer choice.
Sequence A melodic or harmonic pattern repeated at a different pitch.
Inversion A melody with its intervals reversed in direction.
Fragmentation Developing a small section of a melody or motif.
Question and Answer A musical phrase followed by a responding phrase.
Hemiola A rhythmic effect that temporarily changes the perceived beat grouping.
