agitation the act or an instance of agitating something; a moving back and forth or with an irregular, rapid, or violent action such as rapid shaking or stirring
aqueous solution solution that occurs when a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance (solute) is evenly distributed within water (solvent)
chemical change one substance is transformed into one or more new products via a chemical reaction
concentration the amount of solute dissolved in a given volume of solvent
dilution the process of decreasing the concentration of a solute in a solution
physical change a change in appearance only and does not impact the identity of a substance
rate of dissolution a measure of how fast a solute dissolves into a solvent to form a solution
solubility the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent
solute the part of a solution in the smaller quantity, often the solid or gas dissolved into a liquid
solution a substance in which a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance is evenly distributed (or dissolved) within a liquid or sometimes a gas or solid
solvent the (often liquid) portion of a solution that is in the greater proportion into which the solvent is evenly distributed
corrosive materials that can attack and destroy, by chemical action, living tissue, organic compounds and metal
dissolve when a solid substance mixes into a liquid and seems to vanish, creating a solution
heterogeneous mixture a material which consists of multiple different substances that are not evenly distributed; each sample of the mixture may have different proportions of the individual components
homogeneous mixture a material which consists of multiple different substances that are evenly distributed; each sample of the mixture will have the same proportion of the individual components
surface area the number of square units necessary to cover the surface of a three-dimensional object without gaps or overlaps
temperature the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles within a substance; a measure of heat energy; measured in degrees Celcius
atom the smallest particle of matter that has distinct physical and chemical properties;
chemical formula the unique combination of chemical symbols and subscripts that describe which and how many of each element are bonded together in a compound
chemical symbol a notation of one or two letters representing a chemical element
compound a pure substance that is made up of two or more different elements in a specific ratio
element a pure substance that is made up of one type of atom
molecule a group of atoms that are chemically bonded to each other
coefficient a number placed in front of a chemical formula to show how many molecules or moles
ratio the fixed proportion of elements—measured by the number of atoms or by mass—that combine to form a compound
subscript a small number written slightly below and to the right of a chemical symbol that indicates how many atoms of that element are present
density a physical property that measures how tightly packed the particles of a substance are compared to the volume of the substance; the relationship between mass and volume
kinetic energy the energy caused by the motion of objects or particles within a system
pure substance material that is made of a single element or compound; every particle of a substance is the same type of atom or molecule
