Terms/ Definitions for Ecosystems

Consumer an organism that gets its food energy from other organisms
Ecosystem Service a process of an ecosystem that benefits people
Energy power or food that organisms use to survive
Erosion slow destruction of surfaces, such as soil or rock, by wind or water
Food Web-connected ways that energy moves through an ecosystem from one organism to another
Keystone Species species that play the most important role in the way an ecosystem functions
Producer organism that makes its own food
Ecosystem a dynamic network of living organisms—such as plants, animals, and microorganisms—interacting with one another and their physical environment, which includes nonliving elements
