| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| anastomosis | creation of an opening between two normally separate structures |
| aneurysm | bulge in a blood vessel |
| angina pectoris | oppressive pain in the chest caused by irregular blood flow to the heart |
| antianginal | drug that prevents or relieves symptoms of angina pectoris |
| antiarrhythmic | drug that opposes an irregular heartbeat |
| antihypertensive | drug that opposes high blood pressure |
| aortectasia | dilation of the aorta |
| aortic aneurysm | bulging or swelling of the aorta |
| aortic regurgitation | flow of blood backward from the aorta into the heart; caused by a weak heart valve |
| aortic stenosis | narrowing of the aorta |
| atrial fibrillation | quivering or spontaneous contraction of muscle fibers of the heart's atrium |
| atrial septal defect | flaw in the septum that divides the two atria of the heart |
| blood pressure | force exerted by blood on the walls of blood vessels |
| cardiac arrest | cessation of functional circulation |
| cardiac catheterization | the process of inserting a tube (catheter) into the heart |
| cardiomyopathy | disease of the heart muscle |
| cardiopulmonary bypass | procedure that temporarily circulates and oxygenates a patient's blood during a portion of heart surgery where the heart is stopped |
| cardiopulmonary resuscitation | basic life support |
| cardiothoracic surgery | surgery that involves cutting through a patient's chest to get to the heart |
| cardiotonic | a drug that increases the strength of heart contractions |
| cardiovascular | pertaining to the heart and blood vessels |
| cardioversion | returning a heart to normal rhythm |
| congenital heart defect | flaw in the structure of the heart, present at birth |
| congestive cardiomyopathy | heart cavity is unable to pump all the blood out of it (congestive) and becomes stretched (dilated), which causes weak/slow pumping of blood |
| congestive heart failure | heart failure characterized by the heart cavity being unable to pump all the blood out of it (congestive) |
| coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) | borrowed piece of blood vessel used to bypass a blocked artery in the heart |
| coronary circulation | circulation of blood from the heart to the heart muscle |
| coronary thrombosis | obstruction of a coronary artery by a clot |
| diaphoresis | profuse sweating |
| diastolic pressure | pressure exerted on blood vessels when the heart is relaxed |
| endarterectomy | surgical removal of the inside of an artery |
| endocardium | tissue lining the inside of the heart |
| epicardium | tissue lining the outside of the heart |
| hypertrophic cardiomyopathy | heart muscle becomes enlarged and blocks blood flow |
| occlusion | closing or blockage of a passage |
| percutaneous coronary intervention | alternate treatment for the coronary artery that passes instruments up a patient's blood vessels into the heart |
| pericardial effusion | fluid pouring into the tissue around the heart |
| restrictive cardiomyopathy | heart muscle hardens, restricting the expansion of the heart and thus limiting the amount of blood it can pump to the rest of the body |
| stress electrocardiogram | records electrical signals of the heart while the patient experiences increases of exercise stress |
| superior vena cava | portion of the vena cava that gathers blood from the upper portion of the body (head and arms) |
| systemic circulation | circulation of blood from the heart to the rest of the body |
| systolic pressure | pressure exerted on blood vessels when the heart is contracting |
| transesophageal electrocardiogram | recording of the heart using sound waves performed by inserting the sonograph into the esophagus |
| varicose veins | enlarged, dilated vein toward the surface of the skin |
| vascular endoscopy | procedure to look inside a blood vessel |
| vasoconstrictor | drug that constricts and narrows the diameter of the blood vessel |
| vasodilator | drug that causes relaxation or expansion of a blood vessel |
| vasopressor | drug that constricts or narrows the diameter of the blood vessel |
| vasospasm | involuntary contraction of the blood vessel |
| vena cava inferior | portion of the vena cava that gathers blood from the lower portion of the body |
| venostasis | trapping of blood in an extremity due to compression |
| ventricular septal defect | flaw in the septum that divides the two ventricles of the heart |
| vena cava | large-diameter vein that gathers blood from the body and returns it to the heart |
