| Term | Definition |

| Process Gains | the team performs better together than members could individually. |
| Process Losses | teamwork actually reduces effectiveness because of poor coordination, conflict, social loafing, etc. |
| Team | Two or more people who work interdependently over time towards a common goal |
| Team Interdependence | How much team members rely on each other |
| Task Interdependence | How much your work depends one someone else's work |
| Task Interdependence - Pooled | Lowest - Everyone works independently EX) Everyone has their own task |
| Task Interdependence - Sequential | One person's work feeds into the next person's. EX) Research -> Writing -> Editing |
| Task Interdependence - Reciprocal | Members continually exchange work - lots of communication |
| Task Interdependence - Comprehensive | Highest Level - Everyone constantly works together - Brainstorming teams are an example. - Higher interdependence means more communication is required |
| Goal Interdependence | How much members share the same goal |
| High Goal Interdependence | Everyone wants the same outcome Benefits: Easier communication, more commitment, fewer competing priorities. |
| Low Goal Interdependence | People care more about personal goals than team goals |
| Outcome Interdependence | Whether members share the reward. |
| Team Composition | Mix of people within the team |
| Task Roles | Focus on completing work EX) Researcher, Organizer, Recorder |
| Building Roles | Maintain Relationships EX) Encourager, conflict manager, Motivator |
| Individualistic Roles | Benefit themselves instead of the team EX) Dominating conversations, avoiding work, seeking attention,. These create process losses |
| Ability | Includes; Cognitive, Emotional, Physical |
| High Emotional Intelligence (EQ) | Research suggests high EQ often predicts team success better than simply having the smartest people |
| Additive | Everyone contributes. Performance equals average ability |
| Disjunctive | Success depends on the best member. EX) Chess strategy |
| Conjunctive | Success depends on weakest member EX) Relay Race |
