What are x-rays? A form of ionizing radiation is radiation that produces positively and negatively charged particles (ions) when passing through matter.
What is exposure? Amount of radiation produced in air when ionizing radiation ispresent.
What is absorbed dose? The amount of energy that is deposited in a material per unit mass of the material.
What is effective dose? A quantity that is a measure of general harm in humans.
What is diagnostic efficacy? How well an exam accurately reveals the presence or absence of disease in the patient.
ALARA is synonymous to what term? optimization for radiation protection (ORP)
What is Background Equivalent Radiation Time (BERT)? A method that can be used to improve understanding and reduce fear and anxiety for the patient.
What is the Image Gently Campaign? Information on pediatric CT dose reduction among the various medical specialties
What is the Image Wisely Campaign? Address concerns about the increase of public exposure to ionizing radiation from medical imaging.
What is the NEXT program? Nationwide Evaluation of X-ray Trends, provide data on the measurement of radiation of x-ray machines.
What is ionizing radiation? (x-rays, gamma rays, and high-energy ultraviolet radiation [energy higher than 10eV])
What is non-ionizing radiation? (ultraviolet radiation [energy less than 10 eV]
List the subatomic particles. Alpha, Beta, Neutron, & Proton
What happens when the subatomic particles are at rest. No ionization occurs
Photoelectric Absorption depends on… 1. Energy (E) of the incident x-ray photons 2. Atomic number (Z) of the atoms comprising the irradiated object
