superfluous adjective—overflowing what is needed; extra.
superimpose noun—to lay something over something else.
superstition noun—a belief that is inconsistent with the known laws of science.
surplus noun—above what is needed.

syndrome noun—a group of symptoms that run together and indicate a specific disease or condition.
synergistic adjective—working together, as when the joint action of two or more things or people increases the effectiveness of each.
synopsis noun—a brief general summary.
syntax noun—the way words are arranged together to form sentences.
synthesis noun—the combining of separate elements into a whole.

abstain verb—to refrain deliberately from an action or practice by one’s own choice.
detain verb—to hold back or keep in.
pertain verb—to belong to as a part, member, accessory, or product.
retentive adjective—holding onto something easily, such as retentive soil or a retentive memory.
sustain verb—to hold up, give support or relief.
TORT to twist
distort verb—to twist from the true meaning, as to distort the facts.
extort verb—to obtain by violence or threat.
retort verb—a reply to an insult or a criticism.
torment verb—to annoy.
torture noun—any severe physical or mental pain.
