What is exposure? Exposure is the ionization of air caused by radiation. It is measured in C/kg or mR.
What is absorbed dose? Absorbed dose is the amount of radiation energy absorbed by the body or a material. It is measured in mGy.
What is effective dose? Effective dose shows the overall effect of radiation on the body. It is measured in mSv.
Why is radiation protection important? Radiation protection helps reduce the risk of harm to patients, workers, and the public from ionizing radiation.
What device measures exposure? An ionization chamber measures radiation exposure.
What does BERT stand for? BERT stands for Background Equivalent Radiation Time.
What is the BERT for a chest radiograph? About 10 days of natural background radiation.
What is absorption? Absorption is when x-rays transfer their energy to body tissues.
What material is usually used for the x-ray tube target (anode)? Tungsten or a tungsten-rhenium alloy.
What is attenuation? Attenuation is the reduction of x-ray photons due to absorption or scatter.
What is the difference between absorption and scatter? In absorption, the photon disappears after giving up all its energy. In scatter, the photon changes direction and keeps some energy.
What are negative contrast media? Air or gas, which make structures appear darker on the image.
What is radiographic fog? Unwanted scattered radiation that reduces image contrast.
Who discovered x-rays? Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered x-rays in 1895.
What is radiodermatitis? Reddening and damage to the skin caused by radiation exposure.
What does effective dose (EfD) measure? The overall risk of radiation exposure by considering the type of radiation and the organs exposed.
