Acute Exposure High levels of chemical exposure over a short period of time.
Chemical Any substance or mixture of substances having a chemical composition and characteristic.
Chemical Inventory A comprehensive list of all products used in the dental office that contain chemicals.
Chronic Exposure Continuous or repeated contact with a chemical substance over a long period of time.
Contaminated Waste Waste that is contaminated from a potentially infectious body fluid of a patient.
Flammable Materials that are readily capable of catching fire.
Globally Harmonized System (GHS) International organization that defines and classifies chemical hazards and standardizes safety labels and SDSs.
Hazard Class A standardized classification that provides a number or name for hazardous chemical properties.
Hazard Classification A systematic statement that divides health and physical hazards into separate, standardized categories.
Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) OSHA standard ensuring employees are informed about the hazards of chemicals in their workplace ("Right-to-Know Law").
Hazard Statement A statement assigned to a hazard class and category describing the nature and degree of a chemical's hazard.
Hazardous Waste Waste that poses a risk to humans or the environment if discarded into landfills or poured down drains.
Health Hazard Evidence that acute or chronic health effects may occur in an employee exposed to a chemical.
Infectious Waste Regulated waste that includes biologic materials capable of transmitting an infectious disease.
Label Elements Required standardized label components including pictogram, hazard statement, signal word, and precautionary statement.
Oxidizers A type of chemical that reacts or causes a chemical to react with oxygen, creating a severe fire hazard.
Physical Hazard A chemical that can be a combustible liquid, compressed gas, explosive, flammable, reactive, or water-reactive.
Pictograms Graphic symbols used on hazard labels to visually identify specific hazard classes and categories.
Precautionary Statement A phrase describing recommended measures to minimize or prevent adverse effects from chemical exposure or improper handling.
Product Identifier The official name or number used for a hazardous chemical on its label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Regulated Waste Items deemed to pose a human/environmental risk whose disposal is regulated by state agencies and the EPA.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) A 16-section form provided by the chemical manufacturer detailing hazards, handling, PPE, and first aid.
Signal Word Two standardized words on SDS/labels: "Warning" for less severe hazards and "Danger" for more severe hazards.
Toxic Chemicals Chemicals that can have a fatal or poisonous effect on human health.
Toxic Waste Chemical waste capable of causing a fatal or poisonous effect in humans.
