Autoclave Instrument for sterilization by means of moist heat under pressure.
Biological Monitoring Verifying sterilization by confirming that all spore-forming microorganisms have been destroyed.
Chemical Vapor Sterilization Sterilization by means of hot chemical vapors (formaldehyde, alcohol, water, acetone, ketone) under pressure.
Clean Area Place where sterilized instruments, fresh disposable supplies, and prepared trays are stored.
Contaminated Area Place where contaminated items are brought for precleaning and thorough cleaning.
Critical Instrument Item used to penetrate soft tissue or bone, posing a high risk of disease transmission.
Dry Heat Sterilizer Instrument for sterilization by means of heated air.
Holding Solution Solution used to prevent the drying of blood and debris on instruments if they cannot be cleaned immediately.
Multiparameter Indicators Strips placed inside packages that change color when exposed to a combination of heat, temperature, and time.
Noncritical Instrument Item that comes in contact with intact skin only, posing a very low risk of disease transmission.
Process Indicators Tapes, strips, or tabs with heat-sensitive chemicals placed on the OUTSIDE of packages that change color at a specific temperature.
Process Integrators Strips placed INSIDE packages that change color when exposed to a combination of heat, temperature, and time.
Safety Data Sheet (SDS) OSHA-required document detailing safety information and precautions for hazardous chemicals used in a facility.
Semicritical Instrument Item that contacts oral tissues or nonintact skin without penetrating tissue or bone, posing a moderate risk.
Single-Parameter Indicators Tapes, strips, or tabs with heat-sensitive chemicals that change color when exposed to a single parameter, such as temperature.
Ultrasonic Cleaner Instrument that loosens and removes debris from instruments using sound waves traveling through a liquid solution.
Use-Life The period of time during which a germicidal solution remains effective after it has been prepared for use.
Wicking Process by which microorganisms are drawn through wet or damp paper packaging material, contaminating sterile instruments inside.
