Clinical Contact Surfaces Surfaces with a high risk for disease transmission that are directly touched or contaminated during patient treatment.
Housekeeping Surfaces Surfaces with low risk for disease transmission, such as floors, walls, and sinks.
Touch Surfaces Surfaces directly touched and contaminated during treatment (e.g., light handles, unit switches, pens).
Transfer Surfaces Surfaces not directly touched, but frequently contacted by contaminated instruments (e.g., instrument trays).
Splash, Splatter, Droplet Surfaces Surfaces contaminated by aerosol spray but do not directly contact the team or instruments (e.g., countertops).
Surface Barriers Fluid-resistant materials used to cover clinical surfaces prone to contamination.
Precleaning The process of cleaning a surface to remove bioburden before it is disinfected.
Bioburden Blood, saliva, and other body fluids that can block disinfectants from working.
Disinfection Process that kills or reduces pathogenic microorganisms on inanimate objects, but does NOT kill bacterial spores.
Sterilization A validated process that destroys ALL forms of microbial life, including high numbers of bacterial spores.
High-Level Disinfectant / Sterilant Destroys all microorganisms (including spores with extended time); used for heat-sensitive reusable items via immersion.
Intermediate-Level Disinfectant Destroys vegetative bacteria, most fungi, viruses, and is tuberculocidal; used for clinical contact surfaces.
Low-Level Disinfectant Destroys vegetative bacteria, some fungi/viruses, but is NOT tuberculocidal; used for housekeeping surfaces without visible blood.
Tuberculocidal Capable of inactivating Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a key benchmark for intermediate-level disinfectants.
Iodophors EPA-registered intermediate-level disinfectants containing iodine; can leave a reddish or yellow stain.
Synthetic Phenol Compounds Intermediate-level disinfectants safe for metal, glass, rubber, or plastic, but can leave a residual film.
Sodium Hypochlorite Commonly known as bleach; a 1:100 dilution is used for general disinfection, but it is corrosive to metals and damages fabric.
Alcohol Not recommended for surface disinfection because it evaporates too quickly and fails to penetrate bioburden.
Glutaraldehyde High-level disinfectant/sterilant with toxic, highly irritating fumes; items must be rinsed with sterile water after immersion.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde (OPA) High-level disinfectant that works in 12 minutes at room temperature, has little odor, but can be expensive and stain skin/plastics.
HVE System Maintenance Must be flushed with a detergent or water-based disinfectant at the end of every day to reduce aerosol contamination.
HVE Bleach Rule Never use sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in the HVE system, as it causes severe corrosion to metal parts.
CDC Carpeting Rule Carpeting harbors bacteria/fungi and cannot be reliably disinfected; it should be avoided in operatories and labs.
Digital Radiography A green infection control measure that eliminates chemical processing fluids and lead foils.
Green Infection Control Measures to reduce environmental impact, including reducing waste volume, minimizing chemicals, and going paperless.
