The Smith System & Safe Driving Basics
1. Rules of the "Smith System": Aim high; Keep your eyes moving; Get the big picture; Make sure others see you; Leave yourself an out
2. You must have liability insurance coverage in TN, covering damage you cause to others
3. A seat belt is the most effective safety device in your car
4. Have your headlights on in fog, snow, rain, and at night
5. The minimum following distance is 2 seconds
6. Types of signs (by shape/color):
Round — regulatory
Diamond — caution/hazard
Rectangular — construction/guide
Yellow — caution
Orange — construction
Green — road sign
Red, black, white — regulatory
Blue — service facility
Brown — recreational/historic spot
Signals, Signs, and Right-of-Way
7. Flashing red light = stop sign (complete stop, then proceed when clear)
8. Flashing yellow = slow down and proceed with caution
9. If there is a broken yellow line in the middle of the road with a solid yellow line to the right of it, you cannot pass even if it is clear
10. Two yellow lines mean "do not cross or pass" on either side
11. You can pass on a single yellow line
12. If there is a white line (stop line) at a stop sign, you must stop before the line
13. You must yield to the car on the right when you arrive at a 4-way stop at the same time. Otherwise, proceed in the order of arrival

Turning, Lane Changes, and Parking
22. Turn into the closest lane for traffic going in that direction
23. A right turn is less hazardous than a left turn because fewer paths are crossed. However, a right turn is more difficult
24. A driver must stop and yield when entering a street from a driveway
25. Complete your left turn when clear if you are caught in the intersection when the light turns red
26. You may NOT change lanes when moving through an intersection
27. When turning, check for pedestrians and oncoming traffic
28. Rearview mirrors do not eliminate blind spots — nothing replaces turning your head
29. You are allowed to drive slower than the posted speed limit in bad weather and heavy traffic; otherwise, drive the posted speed limit
30. Before backing up, check your surroundings fully — front, both sides, and rear — using mirrors and physically turning your head to look through the back window

Defensive Driving & Stopping Distance
37. A defensive driver considers what other drivers might do

39. Total Stopping Distance = Perception + Reaction + Braking distance
41. Children 3 and under must be in a car seat; children 4–8 must be in a booster seat
42. Fines for speeding in a work zone are doubled when workers are present
43. In TN, headlights must be on from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise, and any time visibility is reduced below 200 feet
44. When approaching a railroad crossing with flashing lights or a lowered gate, you must stop at least 15 feet from the nearest rail
45. TN's hands-free law prohibits holding or physically manipulating a phone while driving
46. Carbon monoxide present in vehicle exhaust can cause drowsiness, blurred vision, and even death
47. At a roundabout, yield to traffic already in the circle and travel counterclockwise
48. Pedestrians in a crosswalk, marked or unmarked, always have the right-of-way
49. Hydroplaning risk increases in heavy rain at higher speeds; reduce speed and avoid sudden braking on wet roads
DUI, Drugs & Alcohol, and Penalties
50. A BAC of .10% makes you seven times more likely to cause a collision
51. TN DUI penalties (minimums):
52. If you are a minor and found with alcohol, you can lose your license
53. Alcohol & drugs together multiply the dangerous effects of each — the effect is synergistic
54. Under the child restraint law, penalties for driving without proper child positioning increase with the number of infractions/persons involved
55. With a 1st DUI: license suspension. You may request a restricted license to drive to work
56. Texting & driving increases crash risk by 23x; penalties include fines and court costs
License Suspension, Bicyclists, and School Buses
57. When a license is suspended, surrender it to authorities and stop driving
58. You must maintain at least 3 feet when passing/overtaking a bicyclist traveling in the same direction until completely and safely past
59. Vehicles stopped behind a school bus while red lights are flashing must remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted & the bus resumes motion
60. Speeding in a school zone is evidence of reckless driving
61. If help has already arrived at the scene of a collision, you should continue driving
Interstate & Highway Driving
62. It is always illegal to back up or make a U-turn on the interstate highway
63. When driving on the interstate/highway, it is illegal to park on the paved or unpaved portion at any entrance/exit ramp unless disabled
64. The following may drive in HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes during heavy traffic periods:
Vehicles, including buses, with 2 or more people
Emergency vehicles
Motorcycles w/ one person
65. Merging on the interstate:
Check for cars
Adjust your speed
Merge using SMOG
66. The Move Over law: if a car with emergency flashers on, or an emergency vehicle, is stopped, you must change lanes or slow down
Traffic Stops, Visibility, and Final Notes
67. If stopped by law enforcement, pull to the right side of the road. Provide the officer with license, registration, and proof of insurance. Keep your hands visible at all times
68. Pull off to the right side of the road when you see emergency vehicles moving with flashing lights/sirens
69. Always use low beam headlights in fog & snow, because bright light reflects and impairs your vision
70. Bright lights should be dimmed when you can see any oncoming vehicle
71. When your visibility is limited, your reaction to hazards may be delayed — slow down
72. 95% of all driving information is received through your eyes
73. Never leave your headlights on when parked at night on a road
74. Cross roads & T-roads are types of junctions
75. There is no grace period in which you may drive legally once your TN license has expired
