私(わたし)は~と思(おも)います "I think that ~" — Express an opinion; attach to plain form verb/adj. Ex: 難(むずか)しいと思(おも)います。
~と思(おも)いました "I thought that ~" — Past opinion or impression. Ex: 面白(おもしろ)かったと思(おも)いました。
~んです "The thing is ~ / It's that ~" — Adds explanatory or emphatic nuance to a statement. Ex: 疲(つか)れているんです。
~をあげました "Gave ~ (to someone else)" — Speaker gives to another person. Ex: 私(わたし)は友達(ともだち)に本(ほん)をあげました。
~をくれました "Gave ~ (to me)" — Someone else gave to the speaker. Ex: 母(はは)はケーキをくれました。
~をもらいました "Received ~ (from someone)" — Speaker received something. Ex: 先生(せんせい)から辞書(じしょ)をもらいました。
~より~のほうが "~ is more ~ than ~" — Standard comparison structure (can end with any adjective). Ex: 犬(いぬ)より猫(ねこ)のほうが好(す)きです。
~てみます "Try doing ~" — Attach て-form + みます; expresses attempting something new. Ex: 食(た)べてみます。
~てもいいですか "May I ~? / Is it okay to ~?" — Asking for permission. Ex: 入(はい)ってもいいですか。
~なければなりません "Must / have to do ~" — Strong obligation. Ex: 勉強(べんきょう)しなければなりません。
~なくてもいいです "Don't have to ~ / It's okay not to ~" — Absence of obligation. Ex: 行(い)かなくてもいいです。
まず、~。それから、~。最後(さいご)に、~。 "First ~. Then ~. Finally ~." — Sequence structure; use when describing steps or a routine.
~たり、~たりします "Do things like ~ and ~" — List representative, non-exhaustive actions. Ex: 本(ほん)を読(よ)んだり、映画(えいが)を見(み)たりします。
~は~で、~です "~ is ~ and ~" — Chain adjectives when describing something. Ex: この町(まち)は静(しず)かで、便利(べんり)です。
~たことがあります "Have (ever) done ~" — Describe a past experience; attach to た-form. Ex: 京都(きょうと)へ行(い)ったことがあります。
