Med Info Basics

TermDefinition
Brand Name Proprietary name given to a medication by the manufacturer. Name usually is recognized by patients (ex: Tylenol)
Generic Name Official nonproprietary name of a medication. Contains the same dosage, strength, route, and quality
Classificaton The group or category a medication belongs to. They can be grouped together based on how they chemically work with our bodies
Indication What the medication does
Side Effects Undesired or unintended effects that may come up when patient takes medication
Contraindications Specific conditions or situations where a medication should not be used because it may cause harm to the patient. (ex: pregnant patient cannot take certain medication bc it may harm baby)
