Medication information basics

TermDefinition
Brand Name The brand name is the proprietary name given to a medication by the manufacturer
Generic Name The generic name is the official, nonproprietary name of a medication.
Classification The classification, also called the drug class, is the group or category a medication belongs to.
Indication The indication is the medical condition or reason a medication is prescribed or used.
Side Effects Side effects are undesired or unintended effects that may happen when taking a medication.
contraindications Contraindications are specific conditions or situations where a medication should not be used because it may be harmful to the patient.
Counseling points. Counseling points are important pieces are important pieces of information patients should know about a medication.
