Short Story Unit

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Setting The time and place of a story.
Characterization The way an author describes or shows what a character is like.
Conflict A serious disagreement or argument
Protagonist The main character about whom the story centers.
Antagonist The character or force opposing the protagonist and creating conflict in the plot.
Irony When the opposite of what you expect happens, or when you say something you don’t mean.
Mood The atmosphere created by the author through setting, imagery, details, and descriptions.
Foreshadowing When an author drops clues or hints about what will happen later in the story.
Flashback When a story takes a break and shows an event from the past.
Tone How you write or say something to show how you feel.
Theme The big idea or life lesson learned from the book.
