| Setting | The time and place of a story. |
| Characterization | The way an author describes or shows what a character is like. |
| Conflict | A serious disagreement or argument |
| Protagonist | The main character about whom the story centers. |
| Antagonist | The character or force opposing the protagonist and creating conflict in the plot. |
| Irony | When the opposite of what you expect happens, or when you say something you don’t mean. |
| Mood | The atmosphere created by the author through setting, imagery, details, and descriptions. |
| Foreshadowing | When an author drops clues or hints about what will happen later in the story. |
| Flashback | When a story takes a break and shows an event from the past. |
| Tone | How you write or say something to show how you feel. |
| Theme | The big idea or life lesson learned from the book. |
