Syringes & Needles

| Syringe | Measures and dispenses liquids. |
| What is the hub (needle hub, base) ? | The plastic portion of the needle that attaches to the syringe. It secures the needle and connects the lumen to the syringe. |
| What is the cannula (shaft, needle shaft, metal shaft)? | The long, hollow stainless-steel tube of the needle that enters the body and carries fluid. |
| What is the lumen (bore, needle lumen)? | The hollow channel inside the cannula through which medication or blood flows. |
| What is the bevel face of a needle? | The slanted, flat surface at the tip that forms the angled point. |
| What is the bevel edge of a needle? | The sharp cutting edge around the bevel face that pierces skin and tissue |
| What is the point ( tip)? | The very end of the needle that first pierces the skin. NOZZLE is the end of it where liquid leves |
| What is the heel (heel of the bevel)? | The back edge of the beveled surface where the bevel joins the shaft. |
| What is needle gauge (gauge size)? | The measurement of the needle's outside diameter (thickness). * Higher gauge = thinner needle * Lower gauge = thicker needle |

| What is the protective cap (needle cap, needle cover, protective sheath)? | A plastic cover placed over the needle to keep it sterile before use and help prevent accidental needlesticks. |
| What is the needle safety shield (needle guard, safety guard)? | A built-in protective device that covers or retracts the needle after use to prevent needlestick injuries. |
| What is a filter needle? | A needle with a built-in filter used only to withdraw medication from an ampule. It removes glass particles and is never used to inject a patient. |
| What is a blunt fill needle (blunt needle)? | A non-sharp needle used only to draw medication from vials. It is not used for patient injections. |
