Sterile Compounding

What is a HEPA filter? High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter. Removes: 99.97% of particles ≥0.3 microns Creates ISO Class 5 air.
What is First Air? The first clean air coming directly from the HEPA filter. Critical sites must always receive first air. Never block it.
What is a critical site? Any sterile surface that must never be contaminated. Examples * needle * needle hub * syringe tip * ampule opening * vial stopper after disinfecting Never touch these.
What is a LAFW? Laminar Air Flow Workbench: A sterile hood that produces ISO Class 5 air. Used for sterile compounding.
How does the horizontal hood do? Air moves: Back ↓ Forward Toward technician. Used ONLY for:
Nonhazardous medications.
How does the vertical hood do? Air moves: Top ↓ Bottom Used for hazardous medications.
What does a Biological Safety Cabinet protect? an enclosed, ventilated workspace used in laboratories to safely handle materials contaminated with (or potentially containing) infectious pathogens
What is a CVE? Containment Ventilated Enclosure Often called a powder hood. Used when handling hazardous powders so they do not spread into the work environment.
What is a PEC? Primary Engineering Control: Any device that creates ISO Class 5 air. Examples * LAFW * Biological Safety Cabinet * Compounding Aseptic Isolator (CAI)
What is a Compounding Aseptic Isolator (CAI)? an enclosed, positive-pressure glovebox designed to prepare sterile, non-hazardous medications.
What is IPA? 70% Isopropyl Alcohol... BECAUSE Water slows evaporation. This gives alcohol more time to kill microorganisms. 70% kills microbes better than 100%.
What is a clean room? Highly controlled sterile environment. Contains the buffer room.
What is the anteroom? The room before entering the sterile compounding area. Used for: - hand hygiene -Garbing = ALL your protective gear - Gowning = actually putting on the gown
What is the buffer room? The actual sterile compounding room. Contains sterile hoods
