Features of informational texts

| Abstract | A summary of a larger work, often a research paper, that highlights its main objectives, methods, findings, and conclusions |
| Table of Contents | A list, typically found at the beginning of a text, that outlines the titles and organization of chapters or sections |
| Preface | An introductory section of a text that provides context, purpose, inspiration, or background for the work |
| Heading | The title of a main section of a text |
| Subheading | The title of a smaller section of a text |
| Graphic Feature | Chart, graph, photo, or other media that support the text's main ideas |
| Caption | Explanation beneath a photo or graphic |
| Parenthetical Citation (In-Text) | A brief reference within the text that identifies the source of the content, which connects to a full citation in a Works Cited |
| Footnote | A note placed at the bottom of a page that provides additional information, explanations, or citations related to a specific part of the text; footnotes are labeled with numbers for navigation |
| Works Cited | A list at the end of a text of all sources directly quoted, paraphrased, or cited; typically used in MLA |
| Bibliography | A list of all sources consulted during the research process, regardless of whether they were cited or not; typically used in Chicago |
| Glossary | A list of featured vocabulary at the end of the text with definitions |
| Index | A catalog list at the end of a text containing all topics discussed, with corresponding page numbers |
