Poem Structures

TermDefinition
Stanza Each "paragraph" of a poem
Rhyme Scheme Stanzas categorized by how the lines are chunked together
Couplet A two-lined stanza Example: Parting is such sweet sorrow That I shall say good night till it be morrow.
Quatrain Four lines that follow a set rhyme scheme Example: He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake
Quintet A five-lined stanza; most popular in limericks Example: There was an Old Man with a beard, Who said, "It is just as I feared! Two Owls and a Hen, Four Larks and a Wren, Have all built their nests in my beard!"
Ballads Narrative poems composed of stanzas; they are often sung. abcb or abab rhyming structure and are usually part of a longer poem. Example: All in a hot and copper sky! The bloody Sun, at noon, Right up above the mast did stand, No bigger than the Moon.
Sonnets Lyric poems composed of fourteen lines and a set rhyme scheme. They often express an emotion or feeling with the final line summarizing the theme. There are three main categories of sonnets: Shakespearean (English), Petrarchan (Italian), & Spenserian
Shakespearean (English) Sonnet three quatrains (abab, cdcd, efef) and a couplet (gg)
Petrarchan (Italian) Sonnet one octave (abba abba) and a sestet (cdc cdc)
Spenserian Sonnet three quatrains (abab bcbc cdcd) and a couplet (ee)
Meter the repetition or stressing of words or phrases
Foot metrical unit composed of both stressed and unstressed syllables
Iambic unstressed, stressed; if also unrhymed, it's called blank verse Frequently with shakespeare Words: Alone, disgrace, belong
Trochaic stressed, unstressed Words: Happy, planet, porous
Anapest unstressed, unstressed, stressed Words: Interrupt, contradict, engineer
Dactyl stressed, unstressed, unstressed Words: Bicycle, Delaware, desperate
