emergency drugs

QuestionAnswer
This emergency drug is used for cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, and acute asthma attacks. It causes vasoconstriction, mydriasis, and bronchial relaxation. In anaphylaxis, the dose is 0.5 mL IM. Adrenaline (Epinephrine)
This anti-arrhythmic drug is the first-line treatment for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). It has an onset of 20–30 seconds and a duration of less than 10 seconds. Adenosine
This anticholinergic drug is indicated for bradycardia (<40–50 bpm), AV heart block, and organophosphate poisoning. It increases heart rate by blocking vagal stimulation. Atropine
This loop diuretic inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the loop of Henle and is commonly used for pulmonary edema, ascites, and hypertension. Furosemide (Lasix)
This medication is used in hyperkalemia, hypermagnesemia, and hypocalcemia. Remember the rule "10:10:10" and administer slowly via IV. Calcium Gluconate
This Class IB antiarrhythmic is used for ventricular dysrhythmias and digoxin toxicity. ECG monitoring is essential because prolonged PR and QRS intervals indicate toxicity. 2% Lidocaine
This weak opioid analgesic binds to opioid receptors and inhibits norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake. It is used for moderate to severe pain. Tramadol
This beta-blocker lowers blood pressure through beta-adrenergic blockade and is used for hypertension, heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. Metoprolol
This sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic drug is commonly used for pre-operative sedation, intubation, and endoscopic procedures. Midazolam
This anti-dysrhythmic medication is used for ventricular fibrillation, unstable ventricular tachycardia, and atrial flutter. The initial dose is 150 mg. Amiodarone
This adrenergic cardiac stimulant increases cardiac contractility and cardiac output without significantly increasing heart rate. Dobutamine
This vasoconstrictor and inotropic agent is used for shock, hypotension, and cardiogenic or septic shock. It must be administered by IV infusion only. Dopamine
This potent vasoconstrictor is used for acute hypotension and shock. Urine output less than 30 mL/hr should be reported immediately. Noradrenaline (Norepinephrine)
This corticosteroid decreases inflammation by suppressing polymorphonuclear leukocytes and is used for allergies, cerebral edema, and septic shock. Dexamethasone
This antihistamine is commonly used for allergic rhinitis, urticaria, allergic reactions, and cold symptoms. Chlorpheniramine
This corticosteroid has anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and mineralocorticoid effects. It is commonly used for asthma, COPD, and adrenal insufficiency. Hydrocortisone
This alkalinizing agent is used to reverse metabolic acidosis and treat salicylate poisoning. ABG monitoring is essential during infusion. Sodium Bicarbonate
