| akinetopsia | the inability to see objects in motion |
| ambiopia | double vision |
| amblyopia | decreased vision (in one eye it is lazy eye) |
| aniridia | absence of an iris |
| aphakia | absence of a lens |
| asthenopia | weak vision (ie eye strain) |
| astigmatism | vision problem caused by the fact that light rays entering the eye aren't focused on a single point in the eye |
| auditory prosthesis | hearing aid |
| aural | pertaining to the ear |
| blepharedema | eyelid swelling |
| cataract | opacity (cloudiness) of the lens of the eye |
| cerumen impaction | buildup of ear wax blocking the ear canal |
| ceruminolysis | breakdown of ear wax |
| cochlear implant | electronic device that stimulates the cochlea; it can give the sense of sound to those who are profoundly deaf |
| conductive hearing loss | sound does not get to the middle/inner ear (due to blockages) |
| cycloplegic | drug that paralyzes the ciliary body |
| dacryocystitis | inflammation of the tear sac |
| dacryadenitis | inflammation of the tear gland |
| dacryocystorhinostomy | creation of an opening between the tear sac and nose |
| diplopia | double vision |
| ear lavage | rinsing/washing the external ear canal usually to remove ear wax (latin for to wash or bathe) |
| ectropion | outward turning of the eyelid, away from the eye |
| entropion | inward turning of the eyelid, toward the eye |
| enucleation | removal of an eye |
| esotropia | inward turning of an eye toward the nose |
| exophthalmus | protrusion of the eye out of the socket |
| exotropia | outward turning of the eye, away from the nose |
| hemianopsia | blindness in half of the visual field |
| hyperacusis | excessively sensitive hearing |
| hyperopia | farsightedness |
| hypoacusis | excessively insensitive hearing |
| intraocular lens implant | insertion of a new lens inside the eye |
| macrotia | abnormally large ears |
| miosis | abnormal contraction of the pupil (Greek for to lessen) |
| miotic | drug that causes abnormal contraction of the pupil |
| mydriasis | abnormal dilation of the pupil |
| mydriatic | drug that causes abnormal dilation of the pupil |
| myopia | nearsightedness |
| nystagmus | involuntary back and forth movement of the eyes |
| otorhinolaryngologist | specialist in the ear, nose and throat |
| ototoxic | drug that is damaging to the ear/hearing |
| papilledema | swelling of the optic nerve where it enters the retina |
| phacoemulsification | fragmentation of an existing lens in order to remove and replace it |
| pneumatic otoscopy | procedure for looking in the ear using air |
| presbycusis | loss of hearing in old age |
| presbyopia | decreased vision caused by old age |
| pterygium | winglike growth of conjunctival tissue extending to the cornea |
| sensorineural hearing loss | sound is not transmitted from the inner ear to the brain (due to problems in sense organs or nerves) |
| strabismus | condition where the eyes deviate when looking at the same object (latin for to squint) |
| tonometer | instrument used for measuring tension or pressure in the eye |
| trichiasis | condition caused by eyelashes growing backward and coming into contact with the eye (intraocular pressure) |
| tympanic perforation | tear or hole in ear drum |
| vertigo | sensation of moving through space while stationary (latin for to whirl around) |
