Third characteristic of life Living organisms recognize external change and respond to maintain homeostasis
Fourth characteristic of life Living organisms grow, develop, and reproduce with the support of DNA
Fifth characteristic of life Living organisms evolve over a period of time
Levels of organization in living things Atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
Definition of atom and structure defintion simplified Basic unit of matter, has a dense nucleus surrounded by electrons
Definition of molecule Chemical structure consisting of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Definition of macromolecules Biologically important molecules with many atoms
Four types of macromolecules Proteins, nucleic acids (like DNA), lipids, and carbohydrates
Definition of cell Coordinated group of macromolecules/ for structure, put simply, it's a drop of water enclosed by a flexible membrane. Smallest being that has all the qualifications for life
Definition of organelles Parts of the cell that have specialized cellular functions
Definition of organism Singular being that works as a unit to reproduce and survive. Can be uni or multicellular
Unicellular meaning Consisting of one cell, called microorganisms or microbes
Multicellular meaning Contains many cells working together
What are the three basic levels of organization in multicellular organisms? Tissues, organs, and organ systems
Tissue description Discrete structures consisting of similar cells
Organ description Multiple tissues that work together to do a common similar job
Organ system description A group of functionally related organs
Definition of population All individuals of a species within a certain area
Definition of community The varying populations within an area interacting and living alongside each other
