4.NBT.1 Vocab place value

TermDefinition
Digit Any of the symbols used to write numbers. All numbers are made of these single digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Place Value The value of a digit based on its position in a number (e.g., ones, tens, hundreds, thousands).
Base-Ten A numbering system based on groups of ten. Each place value is worth 10 times the place value to its right.
Period A group of three digits in a multi-digit number, separated by commas (e.g., ones period, thousands period).
Standard Form The standard way to write a number using digits (e.g., 1,245).
Expanded Form Writing a number to show the value of each digit (e.g., 1,000 + 200 + 40 + 5).
Word Form Writing a number using words (e.g., one thousand two hundred forty-five)
Ten Times As Much or Ten Times More The rule that moving one place to the left makes a number 10 times greater (e.g., 100 is ten times as much as 10).
Place The specific location of a digit in a number.
Value How much a digit is worth based on its place. For example, in the number 550, the first 5 has a value of 500, while the second 5 has a value of 50.
