4.NBT.1 Vocab place value
| Term | Definition |

| Digit | Any of the symbols used to write numbers. All numbers are made of these single digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. |
| Place Value | The value of a digit based on its position in a number (e.g., ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). |
| Base-Ten | A numbering system based on groups of ten. Each place value is worth 10 times the place value to its right. |
| Period | A group of three digits in a multi-digit number, separated by commas (e.g., ones period, thousands period). |
| Standard Form | The standard way to write a number using digits (e.g., 1,245). |
| Expanded Form | Writing a number to show the value of each digit (e.g., 1,000 + 200 + 40 + 5). |
| Word Form | Writing a number using words (e.g., one thousand two hundred forty-five) |
| Ten Times As Much or Ten Times More | The rule that moving one place to the left makes a number 10 times greater (e.g., 100 is ten times as much as 10). |
| Place | The specific location of a digit in a number. |
| Value | How much a digit is worth based on its place. For example, in the number 550, the first 5 has a value of 500, while the second 5 has a value of 50. |
