Typical Language Development: Birth to Toddler

Birth to 1 Year vocal development, first words approx. 12 months, intentional communication
1 to 3 years semantics (vocab grows) and syntax (creates 1-4 word sentences)
5 to 18 years develop flexibility and learn to read/write
Language Disorder difficulty understanding or using spoken/written forms of language compared to what is expected of that age
Primary Language Disorder a lang disorder that occurs without any other major disabilities
Secondary Language Disorder a lang disorder as a result of an intellectual/developmental disorder
Specific Language Impairment a significant difficulty understanding/using language in children (not caused by conditions/disabilities)
