Mono-, uni- ONE Unilateral, affecting only one side of the body
Bi- TWO Bilateral, affecting both sides of the body
Tri- THREE Triceps, a muscle with three heads
AB- AWAY FROM Abduction, movement away from the midline of the body
Ad- Toward Adduction, movement toward the midline of the body
Ecto-, exo- Outside/outer Exoskeleton, outer skeleton
Endo- Within/inside Endoscopy, a procedure that is done to look inside the body
Epi- Upon/ above/ on Epidermis, the outer layer of the skin
Anterior or ventral- Toward the front of the body The chest is located on the anterior (ventral
Posterior or dorsal - Toward the back of the body The spine is locate on the posterior (dorsal)
Superior - Above or toward the head The head is superior to the shoulders
Inferior - Below or toward the feet The stomach is inferior to the heart
Lateral - Away from the midline of the body The lungs are lateral to the heart
Distal - Farther from the point of attachment or origin The fingers are distal to the wrist
Proximal - Closer to the point of attachment The elbow is proximal to the wrist
Ambi - Both / both sides Ambidextrous (able to use both hands equally well)
Dys - Bad / painful / difficult / abnormal Dysfunction (impaired or abnormal functioning)
Eu - Good / normal / well Eupnea (normal breathing)
Homo - same / alike Homeostasis (maintaining a stable internal environment)
Iso - Equal Isometric (equal length, often used in muscle contraction)
Mal - Bad / poor Malnutrition (poor nutrition)
-algia Pain Neuralgia, nerve pain
-emia Blood Condition Anemia, a condition with low red blood cells
-itis Inflammation Arthritis, inflammation of the joints
-lysis Breakdown/ deconstruction Hemolysis, breakdown of red blood cells
-oid Resembling/like Mucoid, resembling mucus
-opathy Disease or disorder Neuropathy, disease of the nerves
-pnea Breathing Apnea, temporary stopping of breathing
-centesis Surgical puncture to remove fluid Amniocentesis, removal of fluid from the amniotic sac
-ectomy Surgical removal Appendectomy, removal of the appendix
-ostomy Creation of an opening Colostomy, creating an opening in the colon
-orrhaphy Surgical repair / suturing Herniorrhaphy (surgical repair of a hernia)
-opexy Surgical fixation / to hold in place Gastropexy, surgical fixation of the stomach
-oplasty Surgical repair / reconstruction Rhinoplasty, surgical repair of the nose
-otripsy Crushing Lithotripsy, crushing of kidney stones
-otomy Cutting into / surgical incision Tracheotomy, an incision into the trachea
