Human Reproduction
Revision for science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Adaptation | An adaptation is a special feature or behaviour of an animal or plant which helps it to survive in its habitat. |
| Binary fission | A kind of asexual reproduction: bacteria copy themselves and then split in half. |
| Continuous variation | A characteristic that can be any value within a range e.g. height. |
| Contraception | Something that prevents a sperm cell from fertilising an egg cell. |
| Discontinuous variation | Characteristics that only result in certain values or fall into very distinct categories e.g. blood type. |
| Eggs | The female reproductive cell: contains 50% of the DNA needed to make a new organism. |
| Embryo | A developing organism in a womb, cells are beginning to specialise. |
| Environmental | A characteristic that an organism has because of circumstances in its environment e.g. speaking a certain language in humans. |
| Females | The female of an organism contains the egg cells for reproduction. |
| Fertilisation | When a male sex cell meets a female sex cell. |
| Foetus | A developing organism in the womb, the foetus stage is after the development of the main organs. |
| Gametes | The male and female sex cells. In humans the sperm cell is the male gamete. |
| Gestation | Gestation is the time it takes for a fertilised egg to develop into a baby. |
| Inherited | A characteristic that an organism has because of its DNA. You obtain half of your DNA from your father and half from your mother. |
| Histogram | A way of displaying continuous data showing bars that run into each other. |
| Hormones | The chemicals that control different functions in the body e.g. development during puberty. |
| Males | The male of a species contains the male sex cell for reproduction. |
| Menstrual cycle | The monthly cycle that involves the production of an egg ready for possible fertilisation. |
| Menstruation | Also known as a ‘period’. If an egg cell is not fertilised, the cell is lost along with the lining of the uterus from the body. |
| Ovaries | Where egg cells are located in a female. |
| Ovulation | The release of an egg from an ovary. |
| Penis | The male reproductive organ in humans. |
| Puberty | The process of physical changes through which a child’s body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction. |
| Sexual reproduction | Reproduction that involves the fusing of two gametes: occurs when 50% of DNA comes from male gamete and 50% of DNA comes from female gamete. |
| Sperm | The male gamete in humans: contains 50% of the DNA needed to create a new organism. |
| Testes | Male reproductive organ where sperm are made and stored. |
| Uterus | Female reproductive organ where a developing embryo is held before birth. |
| Vagina | Female reproductive organ which is the muscular tube the opens to the outside of the body. |
| Variation | Variation A difference between an organism. Can include both inherited and environmental variation. |
| Zygote | Newly fertilised egg: consists of one cell with enough DNA to form a new organism. |
