Who founded ACT? Steven C. Hayes
What is the main idea of ACT? To help the client accept the ups and downs of life, figure out their personal values, and commit to behavior that matches those values
According to ACT what is acceptance? Becoming aware of and making space for all experiences w/o judging them. This can include emotions, thoughts or feelings.
What is an example of acceptance? The client recognizes that they feel overwhelmed and they are able to say "I know I feel overwhelmed right now and I'm okay with that".
According to ACT, what is Cognitive Diffusion? A technique to lower the power of unhelpful thoughts. The client is taught to distance themselves from their thoughts so their behaviors are not influenced by them.
What is an example of Cognitive Defusion? The client is able to say something is "just a thought" and not get stuck in the content of it
According to ACT, what is a Committed Action? A behavior that actually matches up w/ the clients's values-based goals.
What is an example of committed action? The client decided that they want to start their own business so that they can work for themself. The client then starts to dedicate 5 hours a week to coming up w/ their business plan.
According ACT, what is a Committed Dialogue? Discussions the client has w/ themself or other people as they work toward identifying their values.
According to ACT, what is Creative Hopelessness? The feeling of being helpless and unbalbe to think of ways to change the problem or situation.
According to ACT, what Treatment Objectives does Creative Hopelessness target? Current coping skills to see if they're working. ~Values identification ~Decision making
What is an example of Creative Hopelessness? A client who is struggling to come up w/ their business name and feels like they'll never be able to think of one
According to ACT, what is Creative Hopelessness another name for? Confronting the agenda
According to ACT, what is Experiential Avoidance? Avoiding thoughts and feelings b/c they're uncomfortable.
According to ACT what is Exposure? Having uncomfortable things (thoughts feelings, situations) so that they can build tolerance and flexibility.
According to ACT, what is Flexible Attention? The ability to move away from unwanted thoughts and feelings to focus on goals
What is an example of Flexible Attention? The client stops focusing on how slow business has been and instead focuses on new marketing strategies
What is Introceptive Exposure? Gradual exposure to physical things connected to situations they fear to reduce anxiety
According to ACT, what are Metaphort? A figure of speech that describes something in a way that creates an image but isn't actually literal
According to ACT, what Treatment Objectives do Metaphors target? Cognitive diffusion and psychological flexibility
According to ACT, what is Mindful Acceptance? Being present and recogniIng your thoughts and feelings w/o judgement
What is an example of Mindfulness Acceptance? Noticing the feelings in your body and the things around you
According to ACT what is Mindful Exercise? Noticing thoughts and feelings and just observing them
According to ACT, what treatment objective to Mindfulness Exercises target? Cognitive diffusion
According to ACT, what does it mean to Name the Story? Labeling a situation to get a better understanding of it.
According to ACT, what treatment objective does Naming the Story target? Cognitive diffusion and increasing psychological flexibility
What is an example of Naming the Story The client decides to name their journey towards becoming a business owner the name "New Beginnings"
According to ACT, what does Observing the Self mean? Looking at yourself from an outsider's view to see the whole picture and view what you're experiencing w/o judging yourself
What is an example of Observing the Self? The client says "I notice when I'm overwhelmed I start to feel really tense. Mydesk gets chaotic, and it gets hard for me to focus on a task for very long.
According to ACT, what is Perspective Taking? Imagining something from a different perspective to get an idea of what else could be going on.
What is an example of Perspective Takiing? The client starting their own business starts to think of what it must have been like for their old boss to run their company
According to ACT, what is Psychological Flexibility? Continuing to work towards goals even when things are hard
What is an example of Psychological Flexibility? The client recognizes building a business has hard parts but doesn't get stuck in those thoughts and keeps working toward their goals.
According to ACT, what is self context? Recognizing who you are and the parts that make you, you w/o judging yourself
What is an example of Self as a Context? The client recognizes that sometimes they get overwhelmed and frustrated, but it doesn't mean that they are a failure
According to ACT, what is Values Based Living? Living life based on the values that you have determined for yourself
What is an example of Values-Based Living? The client's value for being their own boss shows up in the prospects they take on, the hours they schedule for themself, and the way the business is run
According to ACT, what is Values-Clarification? Honing in on what is considered to be of value
What is an example of Values-Clarification? The client spends time deciding why they want to be their own boss so that they can communicate their reasoning more clearly.
