Dred Scott vs Sanford 1857 Declared Slaves were were property and could be taken anywhere, stated blacks were not citizens and declared the Compromise unconstitutional until 13 and 14th amendment
McCulloch v Maryland 1819 Showed supremacy of national government over state government when it conflicted and confirmed congressional use of the implied power clause in regard to a National bank
Gibbons vs Ogden 1824 Established basis of congressional regulation of all types of interstate commerce and declared supremacy of national law to state law when two conflicted
Plessy v Ferguson 1896 Permitted legal segregation by ruling that separate but equal facilities did not violate the Constitution's equal protection clause
Schenck v United States 1919 Established limits on free speech 1st amendment holding that this right is not absolute
Korematsu v United States 1944 Ruled that the executive order that sent Japanese-Americans to Internment camps during WWI was constitutional because of national security
Brown v Board Of Education 1954 Overturned Plessy vs Ferguson by stating separate but equal went against amendment 14
Gideon v Wainwright 1963 Ruled that police must inform suspects when arrested of their right to remain silent, their right to have a lawyer when questioned and that what they say may be used against them.
Roe v Wade 1973 Gave women the right to abortion and supported this decision based on a constitutional right to privacy
Mapp v Ohio 1961 Decision in case was a clear statement by the court that due process clause of the 14th amendment extends the 4 the amendment to the states
Escobedo v Illinois 1964 Ruled that 14 amendment due process clause guaranteed a 6th amendment right to a lawyer to all defendants in a criminal case, extended 14th amendment to all defendants
United States v Nixon 1974 Dealt with the principle of separation of powers and whether or not a president could invoke executive privilege to withhold evidence needed I prosecuting a crime
Eagle v Vitale 1962 Ruled that prayer ins cholos violated the 1st amendment establishment clause (separation of church and state)
